Libyan military brigade destroyed the memorial honouring the leader of pan-Arab nationalism, Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi. The statue had been erected by the ousted regime of Muammar Gaddafi, whose policies for decades had been influenced by Abdel Nasser’s pan-Arab nationalism. The statue placed in Gamal Abdul-Nasser Street, which was renamed as "Independence Street", was demolished using hammers and bulldozers. No specific reason was given for destroying the statue. It is noteworthy that demolishing the statue, which was built in the eighties, was at the presence of intensive security and media sources.
