Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s sons Alaa and Gamal will face a new trial on July 9 on corruption charges after they were acquitted by another court, the official MENA news agency reported on Tuesday. Alaa and Gamal, who are held in prison pending the trial, are accused of insider trading in Egypt’s stock market along with seven others. The two had faced different corruption charges along with their father in a separate trial earlier this month, but the court dropped them due to the expiry of a statute of limitations. MENA reported last month that the charges stem from the sale the Al Watany Bank of Egypt That court sentenced Hosni Mubarak and his interior minister to life in jail on charges over the killing of protesters during the uprising that ousted the former strongman in February 2011. Gamal, 48, headed a powerful policy committee in the ruling party under his father and was widely seen as the heir apparent, a perception that helped fuel the uprising against Mubarak. Alaa, the older son, stayed out of politics but was rumoured to have amassed a fortune using his father’s connections.
