UN Refugee Chief: World must act to end South Sudan suffering.
Khartoum - Arab Today

Sudan's Commission for Refugees and the High Commission for Refugees have signed a memorandum of understanding to provide necessary services to South Sudanese refugees in the states of East Darfur, South Kordofan, West Kordofan, White Nile and Khartoum.

Hamad al-Jazouli, Sudan's commissioner for refugees, and Angela Li Rosi, the representative for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan, singed the memorandum.

"The registration and setting up camps for South Sudanese refugees will start in coordination with the UNHCR," al-Jazouli said following the signing ceremony.

"The initial registration of the South Sudan refugees after recent incidents in Juba accounted for 500,000," he added, pointing out that Sudan's High Migration Council had issued a decision to treat South Sudanese who have recently fled to the country as refugees.

Nearly 90,000 refugees from South Sudan have fled to Sudan since the start of 2016, according to the UN reports released mid-August.

Previous UN statistics showed as many as 198,600 South Sudanese have fled to Sudan after conflicts broke out there since mid-December 2013.

Most of South Sudan refugees are living in seven camps in Sudan's states of White Nile, East Darfur, West Kordofan and Khartoum.
