At least 23 people were killed and 50 others injured in twin bombing attacks on Wednesday in southern Afghanistan, police said. "An explosive-packed motorbike blew up on the road to Kandahar airport and subsequently a suicide bomber detonated himself among the people gathered at the scene," Kandahar police chief Abdul Raziq told to media, according to the (AFP) The attack happened in a parking lot holding dozens of trucks supplying the NATO-run Kandahar Air Base and a makeshift bazaar. Twenty-three people, all civilians, were killed and 50 others wounded, Raziq said, describing most of the victims as drivers, their assistants and workers. "All casualties are civilians -- not a single military person," he said. The Kandahar airport is located near a large NATO military base. The province is known as the birthplace of the Taliban movement that has been waging an insurgency. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings.
