Cairo – Akram Ali

A number of Syrian activists in Cairo stormed the new offices of the Syrian embassy in Cairo, setting parts of it on fire. Eyewitnesses told ‘Arabstoday’ that protesters broke the furniture and equipment, in addition to setting parts of the building ablaze, in protest of the most recent bloodshed in Homs.   Syrian embassy official Ammar Mohamed said he had been told by security officials about the overnight attack and arrived at the site to assess the damage. The scene was calm by early morning and Egyptian police were guarding the embassy. Hundreds of protesters crowded in front of the police station, a few blocks away from the embassy, demanding the release of 11 Syrians and Egyptians who were arrested during the storming of the embassy. The gate of the embassy in central Cairo was broken and furniture and computers were smashed on the second floor of the building, a Reuters witness said, viewing the site after the attack. Parts of the first floor were burned, he said. This was the second attack on the embassy, which was broken into last week in another demonstration against President Bashar Al-Assad, who has turned his army against demonstrators seeking an end to his rule.
