Commenting on the tabling today of a draft resolution in the UN General Assembly Third Committee on the human rights situation in Syria, UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative Sir Mark Lyall Grant said: “The draft resolution tabled today is the result of close consultations with Arab League members as a response to critical events on the ground in Syria. It complements the ongoing efforts of the Arab League, for example by inviting the UN to offer support, if requested, for the League of Arab States’ proposed observer mission in Syria. Jordan, Morocco, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are among those states to have co-sponsored the resolution. "We hope that others will also co-sponsor, and that there will be strong majority support for the resolution when it comes to a vote early next week," said Sir Grant. As the universal United Nations forum for Human Rights, the General Assembly’s Third Committee must play its part in showing that the UN will not allow atrocities in Syria to go unchallenged.”
