Nouakchott – Mohammad Sharif Abeidy

The American ambassador in Nouakchott, Joe Eileen, left Mauritania on Thursday morning. This follows violent demonstrations in Nouakchott on Wednesday evening in front of the US Embassy to protest against the movie “Innocence of the Muslim” The demonstrators said they would demonstrate on Friday to force the American ambassador to leave the country. Joe Eileen was taken to Dakar, Senegal. Some people believe that the Ambassador leaving Mauritania is a step that could appease the general anger. The Mauritanian authorities fear that the angry demonstrations may spread all over the country after Friday’s prayer, especially in Nouakchott.
