Zambia recorded a 12 percent reduction in road traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2016 for the first time in more than a year, figures released on Sunday showed.
The country recorded a total of 7,704 accidents between January and April 2016, according to figures released by the Zambia Road Safety Trust, an organization that promotes road safety.
According to the figures, 408 people were killed during the same period in road traffic accidents compared to 465 recorded in the same period last year while a total of 1,350 people were left seriously injured compared to 1,558 last year.
Daniel Mwamba, the organization's executive director attributed the reduction in road traffic accidents and fatalities to increased collaborations by all stakeholders to combat road carnage.
"Every case involves someone's life, their family and friends, and personal suffering. That is why, despite all the statistical success, we must never relent in our efforts to make our roads even safer
