A heat wave and sun stroke have killed 111 people in the Southern Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Indian news agency IANS reported.
Mahabubnagar district in Telangana recorded the highest death toll at 28 while districts of Medak recorded 11, Nizamabad 7, Karimnagar and Khammam 5 each, Adilabad and Warangal 4 each and Nalgonda 2.
According to IANS at least 45 people have died of sunstroke in Andhra Pradesh during last one week. 16 deaths were reported from YSR Kadapa district while Prakasam district reported 11 deaths. The remaining causalities were reported from Anantapur, Vijayanagaram, Chittoor, Kurnool, Srikakulam, Krishna and West Godavari districts.
India's summer starts in April, peaks in mid-May and continues until late June when the weather cools with the arrival of monsoon rains.
Last year, reports of heat-related deaths did not start until late May and went on to number more than 2,000, one of the highest tolls on record, with most casualties in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
