The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, MoFaIC, today signed a co-operation agreement with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, UNICEF, about the entiy's integrated life-saving and early recovery interventions in support of affected women and children in Yemen.

According to the agreement, the UAE will donate AED7.3 million, or US$2 million, to UNICEF, as part of its contributions to the plan for saving lives and early recovery of affected children and women in Yemen, as part of the UAE’s humanitarian response to the country.

The agreement was signed by Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister at MoFaIC, and UNICEF Gulf Area Office Representative ad-interim, Shahida Azfar. The agreement is part of the UAE's efforts to support UN humanitarian plans in Yemen.

Al Shamsi said that signing the agreement with UNICEF is part of the UAE’s response to the current emergency situation and its support for those in need, especially children under the age of five and women in Yemeni governorates, who will benefit most from the agreement.

"The aim of the project is to provide integrated nutritional services and life-saving supplies to over 7,444 malnourished children and 12,500 pregnant and nursing women," he added.

According to the agreement, UNICEF will expand its treatment services through an outpatient nutritional treatment programme while deploying mobile teams in various governorates that lack sanitation and essential facilities.

The project includes a range of activities, such as providing life-saving treatment services for children under the age of five suffering from acute malnutrition, opening 149 new offices and training 200 healthcare workers on the community management of acute malnutrition, infant and young child nutrition counseling in Yemen, and the deployment of teams to provide integrated health and nutritional services.
