Member of Parliament Ghassan Moukheiber said on Friday that Lebanon paid an enormous price to bring Syrian hegemony over Lebanon to an end, noting that the countries of the world well understood Lebanon's decision to dissociate itself from Syria's condemnation at the International Security Council. In an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio station, the Reform and Change MP went back in history to remind the Lebanese of the dauntless national endeavors and sufferings that had been finally triumphed with the Syrian Army's withdrawal from Lebanon. "Lebanon refuses Syrian intervention in its national affairs. Thus, it is only normal for Lebanon not to meddle into Syrian internal affairs," he said. "The soundest decision is neither to interfere at the official, nor at the political levels," he added, calling for giving Syria the chance to resolve its own affairs. Moukheiber, however, made clear that Lebanon's decision to refrain from voting for the Western-drafted statement on Syria at the United Nation Security Council was in agreement with the International Community. "It did not hinder statement issuance," he said about Lebanon's position. Touching on the heatedly debated Lebanese prisons' matter, the MP chose to hold the Lebanese Parliament responsible for the establishment of appropriate decisions to build new prisons that comply with international standards. He also called for the reduction of the number of prisoners held in penitentiaries, pending their trial date.
