The US might have lost control over the situation in Syria and cannot fulfill its pledge to separate between opposition and terrorists, Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin was quoted by Tass News Agency as saying on Sunday.
"It is very sad that the US resorted to such steps at such an important moment," Churkin told journalists commenting on the US-led coalition’s airstrike at Syrian government forces near Deir ez-Zor.
"One can assume that the Americans have lost control over the situation because they have not been able to fulfill the promises they made to us for a very long time," he added.
The diplomat reminded that US pledged back in February to separate between the moderate opposition and Jebhat al-Nusra terrorist organization (banned in Russia). "In reality, they did not succeed in this," he stated.
"How can we interpret such actions by the United States? I must admit that you can only guess here," Churkin noted.
"We can probably assume that what we hear from Washington, when the president and state secretary say one thing, and the Pentagon says something different - maybe that was a factor.
However, it is clear that some serious steps, actions are needed here from the United States. To be honest, I cannot say now what these steps should be," he concluded.
