Centre-left politician Frank-Walter Steinmeier has today been elected as president of Germany. The former foreign minister was voted in by a Bundestag parliamentary assembly by a majority of 931 votes out of 1239.
The new sixty-one-old leader will take over from outgoing President Joachim Gauck whose five-year term came to an end.
