Surabaya, Liverpool establish cooperation on 5 areas

The city administrations of Surabaya and Liverpool, UK establish cooperation on five areas which the memorandum of understanding will be signed in 2018.

"The five areas of cooperation are creative economy, sports, arts (music and film), commerce and education," Liverpool Deputy Mayor Gary Millar said at a meeting with Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini here on Monday.

Millar said even though Surabaya has established cooperation on sister city with several cities around the world, including those in England, Liverpool is very different.

"Liverpool is a city with a good history, friendly people, has good industry and great universities. We will work with the Surabaya City Administration to develop those areas. Thank you for hosting us so well," Millar said.

He added that Liverpool was ready to share its experience in managing creative music industry. The Liverpool Administration has a place for youths to develop their talents in music and arts.

"We have a lot of street musicians who then become great musicians. That`s why we have a good music industry climate," he said.

Mayor Tri Rismaharini appreciated the visit of Liverpool Deputy Mayor. According to her, Surabaya and Liverpool have some things in common.

"The Liverpool and Surabaya have same spirit. Liverpool has good balance of education, arts, music and sport, which we want to develop the same in Surabaya. If these areas are well developed, other fields will also grow," she said.

The mayor explained that the Surabaya Administration is doing a selection for children under the age of 11 to participate in soccer and music trainings in Liverpool.

"I hope they have a vision not only to play music, but also to understand about management, how to work with relevant parties, and how to develop themselves and their talents," she said
