Kuwait's delegate to the United Nations, Mansour Al-Otaibi, called for a permanent membership for Arab region in the Security Council (UNSC).
In a speech read out on behalf of the Arab group at the 70th UN General Assembly (UNGA) discussion over UNSC reform, Al-Otaibi said that any expansion of the UNSC membership have to guarantee a fair representation to the Arab region in the Council, through both permanent and non-permanent seats.
He clarified that Arab countries do not have the veto rights, of the UNSC permanent members, despite the fact that nearly 30 percent of the dossiers tackled by the UNSC are related to Arab issues.
Al-Otaibi noted that the misuse of veto right by some countries have crippled the UN organization's ability to take necessary actions to maintain world security and peace. These practices have also hit hard the credibility of the Council, he said.
Al-Otaibi welcomed proposals to restrict the use of veto and to ban it in handling war crimes, ethnic cleansing and extermination cases, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
