Olympic chief Thomas Bach believes reform at scandal-engulfed FIFA "may be painful but is absolutely necessary".
The IOC president compared the crisis at football's world governing body with the bribes-for-votes furore over the awarding of the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City.
The 61-year-old German said it was only by "putting everything on the table that the IOC had restored its credibility" 15 years ago.
Speaking at Olympic headquarters in Lausanne on Monday Bach said the scale of the 2002 Games affair was not of the same "magnitude" as the one currently enveloping FIFA.
