Kuwait's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament was successful and it will lead to the improvement of this competitive martial art in the future, said an official here Saturday.
Member of the Martial Arts Committee of Kuwait Olympic Committee, Fouzan Al-Sabej told KUNA that the tournament saw the participation of 37 BJJ practitioners competing in various weight categories.
BJJ is a grappling martial arts with origins tracing back to Japanese Jujitsu. The main focus of this martial art is to perform submission holds or chokes to win over the opponent.
Meanwhile, Al-Sabej indicated that the tournament was held with the main goal of selecting members of the national team which will compete in events abroad.
He revealed that 12 BJJ practitioners came on top during the course of the competition.
The team now will hold a local training camp in preparation for future competitions within the GCC and Asian regions.
BJJ was made famous with practitioners such as Royce Graice, four-time winner of the famous Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
