Qatar was not "officially asked to host" the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations but is "ready" to assist in staging the event after Morocco was stripped of the hosting right, HE Qatar Football Association (QFA) President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani said Thursday in a statement.
"If officially asked, Qatar is ready to offer any help in hosting the African Cup due to its strong relation with Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF)," on one side and because Qatar has always sought to play a leading role in global football march, he said recalling Qatar's organization of the 1995 World Youth Championship after it was moved from Nigeria due to an outbreak of cholera.
In a press statement today, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani said the decision concerns CAF, which, he added, all world football authorities including FIFA are expected to support. "QFA will be part of this big family that will spare no effort in order to please the masses of African football fans."
