A fire erupted Friday at the Zaatari Refugee Camp destroying as many as 35 tents sheltering Syrian refugees. The Jordanian civil defense department said in a statement that the blaze was caused by a gas leak at one tent and was extended to adjacent tents. The statement added that civil defense forces rushed to the camp and controlled the fire before anyone got hurt. After extinguishing the fire, riot erupted when Syrian refugees hurled stones at security forces, who responded by firing tear gas to disperse the protestors. According to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, the 1,000-acre Zaatari refugee camp in northern Jordan is home to more than 146,000 individuals.
