Mohammed Fadhil Al Hamli, Chairman of United Arab Emirates Paralympics Committee, has been re-elected as a member of the Board of the International Paralympic Committee, IPC, during the 18th IPC General Assembly in Abu Dhabi, which was hosted by the UAE at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on Friday.
Al Hamli also chairs the UAE Disabled Sports Federation.
Andrew Parsons of Brazil was also elected as the new IPC President after one round of voting.
"I am absolutely delighted and I do not know what to say. I would like to thank the IPC membership for their trust," said Parsons, the third president in the IPC’s history.
"Throughout my campaign, I think I have explained what I plan to do as IPC President, and the membership has understood and given me their support," he added, "Now, it is time to roll up the sleeves and work really hard with the membership and the new governing board," he further added.
Parsons also paid tribute to his predecessor, Sir Philip Craven, who stood down today after 16 years in the role.
Parsons was elected through a secret ballot by the IPC membership, which includes national paralympic committees, international federations, international organisations for the disabled and regional organisations. A total of 163 members, as well as the Americas Paralympic Committee, attended Friday’s election and were eligible to vote.
Ten members at large were elected by the IPC Membership.
The governing board will serve a four-year term, with the next elections being held in 2021. It will hold its first informal meeting on Saturday, 9th September.
