Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

A UAE newspaper has said that "hope is itself a species of happiness, and, perhaps, the chief happiness which this world affords." Samuel Johnson’s quote could not be more apt, particularly in a time of conflict and economic despair that’s been plaguing the world. It forms a fitting backdrop to the Arab Hope Makers initiative.

Hope has a huge potential and can make people do amazing things for others. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, knows this full well.

"Sheikh Mohammed is a man of ideas, which is why he launched the drive," said the Gulf Today in an editorial on Sunday.

The paper continued, "He invited outstanding individuals with an accomplished portfolio of philanthropic activities and community initiatives from the Arab region to take part in the initiative.

"The interesting part is among the individuals who can qualify are those at two extremes of the age spectrum: from people who are 95 years old to five-year-olds.

"The AED1 million initiative is an extension of the Year of Giving 2017. It aims to inspire hope in the Arab region by highlighting heart-warming community stories of kindness. The goal is to explore inspirational stories and highlight noble humanitarian programmes, projects and initiatives.

"The drive already has garnered over 20,000 entries from Arab countries just a few days after its launch.

"The organisers at Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives expect to see more entries before the 3rd April deadline for registration.

"Under the terms and conditions of the programme, entrants are required to be active in volunteering and humanitarian work, especially noble merits of self-sacrifice and a passion for serving people. Other conditions include people who are recognised in the community for their good conduct and noble humanitarian values, and those who believe in the potential of young people in the Arab world.

"The Arab Hope Makers has gone viral on social media networks, receiving an enthusiastic response from visitors across the UAE and Arab world. The initiative’s official website has registered more than one million hits and its hashtag is trending.

"Philanthropists and humanitarians do not just bring hope and raise the morale of society, they also serve as models for others. They also do something which is truly heartening: enriching the soul.

As the saying goes, ‘Cast your bread upon the waters.’ Good deeds, above all, leave a trail of benefits not just for the doer, but also for the receiver."
