Beirut - Arab Today

MP Boutros Harb on Tuesday hailed the Lebanese Army's victory in Ras Baalbek and al-Qaa; however, he said that the Army's triumph was submerged with grief, especially with efforts to spare terrorists, who are responsible for the death of the eight military hostages, punishment.

Harb also lambasted the fact that Daesh had not only escaped punishment, but had also been provided with a safe passage towards Syria.

"Great victory has been achieved and this is a great thing. We have liberated our land from terrorism, and this is also a great thing. We have martyrs who fell in the battle and for whom we bow in respect. We have kidnapped soldiers whose bodies have been found as a result of an agreement; nonetheless, no one should try to exploit this matter in the service of political gains or electoral gains," Harb added, hoping that the Army's feats will be deemed a national event that celebrates the liberation of the country from terrorism.

As for those behind the decision to halt the war against Daesh back in 2014, Harb said: "I was a minister in the government back then, and this issue had been raised at the cabinet table. The army commander was present and told us, 'If we continue the battle in Arsal, more than 1000 soldiers will die.' It was the choice and advice of the army leadership at the time to halt the battle to prevent thousands of casualties."

As for joining the same electoral list as that of Mrada Leader Sleiman Frangieh in the forthcoming legislative elections, Harb said: "We are on the threshold of elections, and forming political alliances is only normal. My relationship with Minister Franjieh goes way back despite our political differences and strategic options, but our relationship continues
