Jordan is taking part in the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century, currently underway in Abu Dhabi, as part of a policy to exchange views on key issues related to the development and deployment of peaceful nuclear power.
The Jordan News Agency quoted Khalid Toukan, Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, JAEC, as saying, "The Kingdom has taken numerous steps towards implementing a national strategy for energy, as laid out in 2007, following in-depth study to formulate safe, economic and a sustainable energy mix in Jordan."
The JAEC works on fostering the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in line with the highest standards of nuclear safety and security, said Toukan.
During the conference, which gathered around 700 participants from 70 member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Toukan highlighted the achievements of three major projects that are key components of Jordan's nuclear programme. He also spoke about the Jordanian nuclear power plant, the Jordan Research and Training Reactor and the Uranium exploration project.
On the sidelines of the event, Toukan met a number of heads of delegations, and reviewed with them Jordan's nuclear plans and joint cooperation. He also signed an agreement on behalf of the JAEC with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission to cooperate in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Throughout the three-day conference, ministers and senior officials from IAEA member states have engaged in discussions on issues including their countries’ energy strategies and visions for the role of nuclear power and challenges to its introduction, continued operation and expansion.
