Freedom and Justice Party opens door for nominations to replace Mohamed Morsi as leader of Egypt's largest Islamist party Nominations for candidates to become the new head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party open on Monday. Former leader Mohamed Morsi resigned from the position when he became Egyptian president in June. The party's high committee will announce the new leader during the party's general assembly on 19 October. Nominations are open until 10 October, with appeals allowed until 13 October. The Freedom and Justice Party was officially founded in May 2011. The political party of the Muslim Brotherhood could not have come into being without the January 25 Revolution. Before then, Egypt’s most powerful Islamist organisation was not only denied the right to form a party, but also barred – at least legally – from participating in politics. As a result, the group paid a heavy price in detentions and repression during the Mubarak era. From ahram online
