The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has joined the international community in condemning the assassination of former Afghan President, Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani. As he offers his condolences to the family of the deceased, the government and the entire people of Afghanistan, the Secretary-General noted that this ugly and cowardly terrorist act, runs counter to the noble values and the teachings of Islam and aims at derailing the process of national reconciliation in the country. The Secretary General paid tribute to the genuine efforts of late Prof Rabbani in trying to achieve national reconciliation through dialogue with all Afghani parties. He also acknowledged his fruitful engagement with the OIC in his capacity as Chairman of the High Peace Council especially during the last meeting of the International Contact Group on Afghanistan hosted by the OIC at its headquarters in Jeddah. Professor Ihsanoglu reiterated his appeal to all Afghans to shun violence and emphasized that dialogue remains the only option to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan. He finally reaffirmed the OIC’s support to the government and people of Afghanistan in their quest to live in peace, security and prosperity, according to a press statement issued here yesterday.
