Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority, EPAA, Eastern Region Branch, organised the fourth round of its ‘Awareness Campaign for the Visitors of Mountainous Areas’ on Wednesday in its continued efforts to conserve the emirate’s wildlife and biodiversity.
The campaign, under the 2017 theme ‘Let it be Towering and Sustainable!’, featured a number of events including a documentary film about Sharjah’s mountainous Eastern Region, and a presentation highlighting the EPAA’s progress throughout the campaign.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPAA, said that the fourth round of the campaign was in line with the Executive Council’s Decree No. 11 of 2014, issued by H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, regarding the prohibition of distortion of mountainous areas in the emirate.
Al Suwaidi explained that the objectives of the campaign are to generate awareness around the importance of the natural environment, protecting the local plant diversity, and preserving the aesthetic of the emirate. The campaign also seeks to prevent the distortion of mountains and natural formations in mountainous areas with graphics, drawings and inscriptions or the setting up of flag or sign poles, as well as contributing to environmental rebalancing, she added.
She emphasised the importance of organising such campaigns due to the necessity to preserve the environment across different regions.
