The public prosecution in Al Ain has ordered imprisonment for two Emirati teenagers who performed a dangerous stunt on a stolen pickup and damaged public properties near Al Ain Airport.

They put the lives of motorists, pedestrians and other people in danger by performing the stunt near a roundabout close to the airport recently, said a statement issued by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) on Sunday

The public prosecution ordered to put them behind bars until the prosecution procedures would be completed. The prosecution warned that strict action would be taken against those who indulge in reckless driving and stunt on road.

Abu Dhabi Police took swift action against the teenagers to protect the lives of people and public property. The existing UAE laws stipulate imprisonment up to three-years for such offences and offenders have to pay compensation if they damaged any properties

Detailing the incident, the ADJD statement said, the two young Emiratis stole a pickup parked somewhere in the town, removed its number plate, drove to a petrol station and filled full tank fuel, and fled away without paying fuel bill. They drove towards Al Ain airport and performed stunts on the grass near a roundabout in airport’s vicinity. They damaged 20 square metres of grass and wasted 100 litres of water by damaging the irrigation system, which costed an estimated Dh11,000 in total

They drove away from the scene but police chased them until their vehicle got stuck in a desert area and arrested them.

Al Ain police’s control room received many phone calls from the public about the stunt. Many people took pictures and videos of the stunt and posted them on social media.

They have been charged for offences such as stealing the vehicle, driving a vehicle without number plate, evading police action, not paying fuel bill and performing stunts and damaging public property
