Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

A selection of workshops held at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre (SZGMC) invited children and families to explore the themes of the Hajj: Memories of a Journey exhibition through engaging and interactive sessions.

The Ancient Writing Tools: Feather & Ink-Making session saw participants aged 12 years and above discover early writing techniques, create traditional writing feathers, and learn how to make an assortment of plant-based inks inspired by ancient traditions. From the early origins of Islam, writing was an essential tool to communicate the messages of the Qu’ran for widespread knowledge. In ancient times, early Muslims would have learned the ancient art of writing using feathers and homemade natural inks.

Children aged between 6 – 13 years took part in the Make your own Astrolabe workshop inspired by the early navigators travelling on their journey to Hajj. Participants learned the intricate ways that this navigation tool was used in ancient times.

The diverse programme of workshops was designed to engage a broad spectrum of ages – from as young as five years old – from all segments of society with a view to showcasing and fostering the development of the arts, which have played a pivotal role in the service of humanity and cultural excellence. Through the various activities and public programmes, the exhibition aims to transfer expertise and knowledge, emphasising the cultural values that flourished during the various stages of Islamic civilisation. This works in line with the efforts and initiatives of the SZGMC, as it bolsters its position as a global cultural attraction that millions of visitors visit each year from different parts of the world.

From 19th – 25th November, a weeklong masterclass led by Adam Williamson and Richard Henry will explore Geometric Patterns in the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Participants will enjoy a practical introduction to the language of symmetry and key motifs located in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and learn about Islamic geometry; plaster carvings, and gold leaf illumination.

The Hajj: Memories of a Journey exhibition celebrates the rich legacy of the spiritual journey of Hajj to the Sacred House of God in Mecca, through the display of more than 182 artefacts on loan from a range of institutions, as well as donations of personal Hajj memorabilia. The exhibition is organised by the SZGMC, on the 10th anniversary of the opening of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. It will remain open to the public until 19th March 2018.
