Gynecology Specialist Dr. Alaa Hassan Nadaf, said that urinary incontinence, the inability to control urine, is a common problem in women, especially after pregnancy and childbirth.

She said, in interview with Arabs Today, that types of urinary incontinence include stress incontinence, which is the inability to control the urine when the abdominal pressure increases in cases such as laughter, coughing, sports as well as sneezing. "In these cases, it is the most common among all types of incontinence, with a prevalence of 50% to 70% among women," she added.

Nadaf added that another type of incontinence is the need to urinate immediately after the urine sensation in the bladder and the inability to limit it. In this type of incontinence, women are suffering from frequent urination in small quantities and the inability to postpone it.
"Mixed incontinence is another type of incontinence, which it combines the symptoms of the previous two types," the doctor stated.

Nadaf pointed out that the factors contributing to urinary incontinence include multiple aging, low estrogen levels with age, interruption of the menstrual cycle, multiple births, severe physical birth and weight gain, as well as certain neurological diseases and chronic diseases such as constipation, cough and diabetes.

Dr. Nadaf explained that the treatment of urinary incontinence is by type, degree of disease and symptoms. The patients should start to change some behaviors, include reducing the drinking of caffeine and water, making a time table for urinate to be regular, in addition to the exercise of trainings for pelvic's muscles under the supervision of the treating physician.

She also pointed out that the treatment may be with drugs or surgical procedures, which aims to change the angle of the urethra for the bladder and treat stress incontinence.
