Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers launched a group attack on a U.S. forces' supply base in eastern province of Nangarhar, the third attack on the same base within a year, sources said.
"Three Taliban armed with suicide jackets, rocket launchers or RPG and weapons raided a coalition base in bordering town of Torkham on early Thursday morning," a security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The trio was killed by security forces, adding one truck driver was also wounded in the skirmish. Casualties on the security force side is unknown.
Following the attack, a Taliban purported spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed the responsibility for the incident.
Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures. Shortly after the attack, the Jalalabad-Torkham highway, a key roadway for local and foreign troops' logistic and supply convoys, had been blocked, witnesses said.
A witness said the at least two blasts occurred and several logistic trucks were damaged following the engagement.
The base is a complex where foreign forces' vehicles and logistic and supply trucks station there.
The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched rebel offensive in mid-May against Afghan government forces and more than 51,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.
In September and November last year, the Taliban stormed the same base, killing several security forces and destroying more than 80 trucks.
