Australia's Mark Hensby birdied three of his final four holes to shoot a seven-under 64 and grab a share of the lead after the second round of the PGA Tour's Barbasol Championship.

The 43-year-old from Melbourne finished 36 holes at nine-under 133 to tie Kim Whee, who fired a five-under 66 at the Grand National Lake Course.

Tour rookie Kim is hoping for his first win on the US tour after shooting an opening round 67.

Hensby's only previous win on the US tour came at the 2004 John Deere Classic. His bogey-free round included seven birdies and 11 pars against a field that is made up of players who failed to qualify for the British Open at St Andrews in Scotland.

First-round leader Sam Saunders, the grandson of golf legend and two-time British Open winner Arnold Palmer, shot a 70 on Friday and was one behind at eight under with Argentina's Emiliano Grillo (66) and Charlie Beljan (64). Grillo is the highest-ranked player in the field at world number 98.

Tour veteran David Toms carded a 66 and was in a large group at seven under that included Andres Romero, Glen Day, J.J. Henry, Germany's Alex Cejka, Carlos Ortiz, Martin Piller, Scott Piercy and Ricky Barnes.
