A flatbed truck and extended passenger van collided in southwestern Ontario, killing 11 people and injuring three others, Canadian police said. The crash happened Monday in Hampstead, northeast of Stratford, around 4:45 p.m. at the village crossroads, the Toronto Sun reported. The driver of the tractor trailer was killed, along with 10 of 13 Hispanic migrant workers in the van, Ontario Provincial Police said. The three survivors were taken by land and helicopter ambulances to hospitals. The force of the collision caused the mangled van to flip and slide into the side of a house 50 yards away, the Toronto Star said. No one in the house was injured. OPP Inspector Steve Porter told a late-night news conference seven ambulance crews, volunteer firefighters and police were traumatized by the carnage. "I've been on the job for 28 years and I've never seen anything like this," he said. Soon after the crash, regional officials sent victims services personnel to the scene to help first responders and witnesses, the Sun said. Police wouldn't speculate on what caused the accident, although weather wasn't a factor, the reports said.
