Damage from typhoon Haikui, which made landfall lat week in China, has been assessed at nearly a quarter billion dollars, insurers said. The storm, the 11th of the year, affected China's southern coastal regions of Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui and "inflicted heavy losses" with damage assessments of 1.46 billion yuan ($230 million), the China Insurance Regulatory Commission said in a statement. More that 2 million people were evacuated, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said. Meteorology authorities in Anhui said Haikui had weakened into a tropical depression by Saturday, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported Monday.
