At least five people were killed after gunmen opened fire inside a mosque in Quebec City, northeast of Canada, during Sunday's evening prayers.
An unknown number of people were also feared injured in the shooting in the Sainte-Foy neighborhood in Canada's French-speaking province of Quebec.
Quebec City police spokesperson David Poitras confirmed that there had been fatalities and injured people, as well as arrests following the shooting but declined to give precise numbers.
"The situation is under control, the area has been secured and we have evacuated the premises of all occupants," Poitras said. "The investigation continues".
According to local broadcaster Radio-Canada, two suspects were arrested in relation to the shooting.
The reason for the attack is not yet known.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the shooting was a "terrorist attack on Muslims".
"We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a center of worship and refuge," Trudeau said in a statement.
