A bus carrying female students from the University of Nizwa
Muscat - Arab today

A bus carrying female students from the University of Nizwa collided with another bus and a truck on Wednesday morning, leaving seven people injured, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Six students were injured, along with the driver.

ROP said that four of the students had sustained moderate injuries and two others had suffered severe injuries.

The driver had also sustained severe injuries.

The injuries included trauma, concussions and broken bones, an official at Nizwa hospital told Gulf News on Thursday

The official added that one other student was treated for minor injuries and discharged.

The accident took place at 7:55 am in Birkat Al Mooz area while the students were heading to the university.

This is the second accident in less than a month on the same stretch in Nizwa.

In February, a bus carrying 24 students from the same university had collided with a truck leaving several students injured.

The student dorms are only six kilometres away from the university campus.

Ahmad Al Nabhani, a resident of Barkat Al Mooz, said that he lost three of his friends on the same stretch last year.

”This single-carriageway road is dangerous. I had an accident myself on this stretch last year,” said Al Nabhani.

Last year, three children and a teacher from Indian School Nizwa were killed in an accident in Bahla province. The children and teacher were on board a bus after a trip to Bahla.

As many as 692 people have been killed in road accidents in 2016, compared to 975 in 2015, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

Speeding and wrong overtaking have been cited as the main causes of road accidents in the country.

On average, two people die in road accidents every day in Oman
