Yangon - UPI

Excavations in Myanmar have not turned up any buried British World War II Spitfire aircraft, contrary to some reports, archaeologists said Friday. Digging in the region began in January in an attempt by businessman David Cundall to discover the location of as many as 124 Spitfires buried by the Royal Air Force, the BBC reported. Archaeologists and representatives from Wargaming.net, the firm that financed the mission, said so far evidence does not support the belief that the planes, said to unused and not fully assembled, are buried. Cundall, though, insists the team is simply looking in the wrong place. He said he plans to keep up the search. "I've tried and I believe it's better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all," he said of the potential for his search to turn up nothing. Cundall has spent the last 17 years trying to find Spitfires that American and British service personnel and locals say were buried in Myanmar, formerly Burma, on the orders of Lord Mountbatten at the end of the war in 1945, the BBC reported.
