Customs officials at Beirut’s airport detained two Australian nationals who were trying to smuggle cocaine into their country Monday. The two Australians, one aged 47, the other 50, drew suspicion of authorities at Rafik Hariri International Airport while they were carrying what appeared to be boxes of sweets weighing some 20 kilograms. Upon inspection, authorities discovered that the boxes, which numbered six, in fact contained cocaine cleverly mixed in with sweets in powder form. The two Australians, who had been headed to Australia via Abu Dhabi, were detained and referred to the police’s anti-narcotics department. Earlier this month, authorities at the Beirut port foiled an attempt to smuggle 8 kilograms of heroin to Belgium. The Daily Star
