Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan briefed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over phone about the killing of Moscow's ambassador to Ankara on Monday, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said, according to Anadolu news agency.
The ambassador was shot multiple times while giving a speech at an art gallery in Ankara's central Cankaya district. He was seriously injured at the scene and taken to Guven Hospital in Cankaya where he succumbed to his wounds.
The assailant was "neutralized" during an operation that lasted around 15 minutes by police special forces at the scene, according to Anadolu.
Karlov had been serving as Russian ambassador to Turkey since July 2013.
