A senior police commander, Colonel Eftekhari, announced Wednesday that Iranian Law Enforcement Police Forces seized over 4.5 tons of opium after intercepting a drug cargo near the country's capital city of Tehran, semi-official Fars news agency reported. Eftekhari said that the cargo with 4.5 tons of opium hidden in a gas-tanker truck, was seized in Malard, west of Tehran, after a series of coordinated operations in which members of the drug ring were arrested. Iran is located at the crossroad of the international drug smuggling route from Afghanistan, the world's top opium producer, to Europe.
