Tropical storm Isaac, which was expected to become a hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, killed 19 people in Haiti. Marie-Alta Jean-Baptiste, a Haitian Civil Protection official, told the media Monday that 300 homes had been destroyed, most of them in the city of Jacmel, on Haiti's southern coast. Another 2,000 homes were reported damaged. Jacmel was badly affected by the quake that killed more than 220,000 people in Haiti in January 2010. Thousands of people continue to live in emergency camps around the country, after their homes were destroyed by the quake. Isaac passed over Haiti Friday and the heavy rains it brought caused flooding across much of the country.
