Los Angeles - Xinhua

An Asian man in his 60s turned himself in to police Thursday, claiming responsibility for shooting at the Chinese Consulate-General's building, police said. Capt. Steven Sambar, major crimes division commanding officer at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), told reporters that the man fired several rounds of shots at the downtown office building that houses the consulate-general. Nobody was hurt in the incident. The man surrendered to the LAPD's Wilshire command at around 4:45 p.m. local time (0045 GMT Friday), more than two hours after the shooting took place, he added. The investigation is still ongoing, said the captain. He told Xinhua that police has already strengthened security measures around the area. The consulate-general has made solemn representations to the U.S. State Department's office in L.A. over the incident, demanding necessary actions be taken immediately to ensure the safety of the consulate's compounds and personnel. Xinhua reporters at the scene saw several police vehicles from the LAPD. Police officers are still interviewing witnesses and searching for bullets and other evidence around the building. The consulate building is still under tight security measures, and the surrounding area was cordoned off by police.
