Police said it is not likely that a snowboarder who was buried under ice on Oregon's Mount Hood will survive. The man, identified as Collin Backowski, 25, of Pines, Colo., and his friends were looking for a place to snowboard Saturday on Mount Hood when they entered an ice tunnel formed by melting snow, The (Portland) Oregonian reported. The tunnel collapsed and Backowski was trapped under a piece of ice the size of a school bus, said Sgt. Pete Hughes, a spokesman for the Hood River County Sheriff's Office, in a statement early Sunday. "This is clearly not a good-looking situation when it comes to survivability," Hughes said. Two other men were hit by debris, but not injured. They were in their 20s, but their names were not released. Rescuers were working to clear ice and debris with hand tools late Saturday. A larger rescue effort was to begin Sunday morning.
