A 75-year-old track and field official has died after being struck in the head by a javelin during a weekend competition in Dusseldorf, Germany, officials say. Witnesses said it appeared the man went out into the field for a measurement at Rather Waldstadion stadium Sunday before the spear landed, TheLocal.de reported. Eurosports identified the victim, who died Monday, as Dieter Strack. "He was hit in the head, in the cheek, and also sustained a wound to his carotid artery," Michael Sandforth, spokesman for the Dusseldorf fire department told TheLocal.de. "He was bleeding very badly and lost a lot of blood. Our emergency doctor administered first aid and then he was taken to hospital." Eurosports reported a statement from the local athletics association said Strack "was a much-loved and experienced judge." "All of us who were there are horrified and in shock," the statement said. "We will always remember Dieter Strack." The javelin thrower was a 15-year-old boy. The Sun, a British tabloid, reported he was treated for shock. There were about 300 athletes and 800 spectators at the track and field competition.
