Cairo - Shaimaa Mikkawi

Young, single men are apparently wearing wedding rings to give girls the impression that they are not available, while married men take off their wedding rings so that they can stop thinking about their responsibilities for a while and "live freely". What are the reasons behind people's strange habits when it comes to wedding rings? At first a young man called Mohammed Ahmed said: "I wear a wedding ring on my hand to show girls I am not single because I do not want any relationships for the time being. In fact, wearing a wedding ring comforts me especially at my work place where there are many girls who want to be married, so the ring does not give them any hope that I'm the one for them!" Hatim Shawqi also chipped in: "Since my engagement, I wore the wedding ring whenever I met my fiancée, who is now my wife and the mother my children. I do wear the ring to satisfy her and I take it off once I come out of the house. It is not a shameful thing as the ring does not represent for me any value and it is not a symbol of the bond between me and my wife. Whenever I wear the wedding ring , I feel too grown up and I am able to live my life like any other young man my age and it is not right to hang out with my friends, that's why I take it off when I go out of the house." Lubna Abdel-Rahman believes: "This is the fifth time I have bought my husband a 'wedding ring' and he has lost it.  I always make sure to buy him another 'ring' so girls know that he is married. Unfortunately, my husband sells women's clothes and he meets dozens of women daily, so why does he take off  his ring? It  bothers me that he does not give any attention to this matter." Mohammed Saher says: "I adore my wedding ring and cannot take it off my finger as my wife's name is written inside it . I can't take it off for one minute since I wore it on our engagement day. I then switched it  from the right hand to the left on our wedding . Since that day and after 5 years of marriage, I have not taken off my ring , and neither does my wife who clings on to it. Dr Mohammaed Sakhaawi , a professor of psychology, gives his opinion: "Men naturally like to be free and don't like restrictions no matter how much they love their wives or fiancées. They almost always want to feel that they do not have any liability for their partners or responsibility in general, this is the main reason behind taking off the wedding ring. Some men also have psychological problems, as they always want to feel  that girls care about them, so they take off the wedding ring to make sure girls still give them attention. Some singles wear wedding rings to rid themselves of girls who have feelings for them that are not reciprocated...these men are apparently wary due to past relationships or are afraid of commitment."
