Tehran - Arab Today

Iran lashed out at the US House of Representatives on Wednesday after lawmakers adopted a resolution supporting recent anti-government protests in the Islamic republic.

Foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi "strongly condemned" what he called "interference" in Iran's internal affairs, Iranian media reported.

"Such resolutions and hostile statements of the US government show the domineering nature of US leaders," he added.

US lawmakers on Tuesday backed the resolution almost unanimously, by a vote of 415 to two.

It said the House "stands with the people of Iran that are engaged in legitimate and peaceful protests against an oppressive, corrupt regime," and condemns the government's "serious human rights abuses against the Iranian people".

Violent unrest fuelled by economic grievances erupted in dozens of Iranian cities between December 28 and January 1, leaving at least 21 people dead.

The resolution called on President Donald Trump's administration to issue new sanctions punishing Iran's human rights violators
