South Sudan's upper nile state Khartoum - Abedalgoum Ashmeag Sudanese officials have announced that Sudan is at risk of flooding this winter. Northern State Deputy Dr Ibrahin al-Khadr introduced a new plan to face the bad weather.  In a statement to Arabstoday, the deputy said that “Sudan may face floods as important as those that happened in 1989. Last time the Nile flooded the mainland, destroying fields and inhabited areas near the river. “The Meteorological Authority has warned that heavy rain would double the river water level within hours. He added: “My region is not self-sufficient for food production. Some islands need to access boats in order to help their populations.” Successive Sudanese governments have urged the islands’ inhabitants to move in order to avoid flooding danger. Floods have already affected the states of White Nile, Kassala, Darfur and Kordofan. 35 people died and about 5000 homes were destroyed. Hundreds of families had to move. Following the catastrophe, Director of Civil Defense Major General Hussein Hashim has announced an aid plan to rescue these areas. Food aid, water pumps and mosquito nets are a key point of this rescue plan as General Hashim appealed to the media “to spread awareness among the population about the bad weather and its consequences.”  He added: "The reason behind this issue is that people are not moving away from these flood-prone areas.” The Ministry of Water Resources announced a continuous increase of water level, demanding from inhabitants and concerned offices to take the needed precautions to save souls and property.  Weatherman Dr Abdullah Khayar asserted that the country will be struck by the heaviest showers it’s seen in 30 years. He forecast the bad weather for mid August.   Kassala has so far been considered one of the worst affected areas for floods.
