London - Arabstoday

Anita Asante was overwhelmed to see her face and those of her Great Britain team-mates emblazoned across the newspapers this week, but knows they must get their feet back on the ground against Cameroon today. Wednesday's Group E win over New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium was the first sporting action of the London Olympics, and the 1-0 win dominated the national media the next day as the host nation got off to a winning start. Midfielder Asante, 27, admitted the level of coverage was something she was more accustomed to seeing reserved for her sporting heroes David Beckham and Venus and Serena Williams. "It was really amazing to see our faces on the front and back pages of all the papers. It's not something we encounter every day," she said. "We are normally looking at our own heroes on those pages, like David Beckham and Venus and Serena Williams, but it's great to see people behind us recognising our performance and how well we played as a team." But with the hype around the opening fixture now over, Asante says it is crucial the British team do not take their eye off the ball against Cameroon, even though the Africans lost 5-0 to Brazil in their first game. "We were aware of all the outside factors and we had strategies to block that out and focus on the team," she said. "We went in there wanting to have fun and be in the moment, once we did that we settled and relaxed. It was good to get it out of the way, but we have to still push forward. Our aim is to try and win the games and get out of the group and we need to focus on what we do not any external factors." Asante was booked early on in the win over the Football Ferns, and has vowed to take a judicious approach to her tackling as she looks to avoid a suspension. She said: "I was disappointed with the booking, I didn't think it was a yellow card to be honest. It is hard to take a step back when you want to get involved in the melee, but I will be sensible, my team-mates will back me and we will defend the best way we can." Prior to the Team GB fixture, New Zealand and Brazil will meet in the other Group E game in Cardiff. At the City of Coventry Stadium, Japan will play Sweden and Canada face South Africa in Group F, while Group G action takes place at Hampden Park in Glasgow between the United States and Colombia, and France and North Korea.
