The United States won a reprieve in Olympic boxing Saturday and Cuba advanced one of its fighters into the quarterfinals. At the close of business Friday the United States had none of its boxers remaining in the tournament. An appeal of a decision involving welterweight Errol Spence, however, put him back in the competition. The international boxing governing body ruled Krishan Vikas of India should have been penalized at least 4 points for holding, which would have given Spence the victory. He will now fight Tuesday against Russian Andrey Zamkovoy in the welterweight quarterfinals. The traditionally powerful Cuban team has six of its eight boxers remaining after light-flyweight Yosbany Veitia Soto lost a 14-11 decision to Zou Shiming of China Saturday. Cuban Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo, however, reached the quarterfinals in the light-welterweight division with an 18-15 decision over Everton dos Santos Lopes of Brazil. Ireland's Paddy Barnes, one of the favorites in the light-flyweight division, also advanced with a 15-10 win over Thomas Essomba of Cameroon.
