The Hague - AFP
Dutchman Mario Been has quit as Feyenoord coach after the players said they no longer had confidence in him, the Rotterdam-based club said on Wednesday. "A majority of the squad, represented by captain Ron Vlaar, informed technical director Martin van Geel that they no longer had confidence in carrying on with the coach," the club said. "Mario Been left the Ermelo training camp after hearing that and informed us that he was standing down as Feyenoord coach with immediate effect." Been had been in place since 2009 on a three-year deal, and in 2010 led the club to fourth in the league and the final of the Dutch Cup, which they lost to Ajax. But the club, which is facing financial difficulties, could only finish the 2011 season in 10th place in the league, the lowpoint of which came in a 10-0 record humbling by PSV Eindhoven in October 2010.
