Paris - AFP

Defending European champions Spain showed off their impressive strength in depth when a second-string side defeated Serbia 2-0, but fellow Euro 2012 favourites Germany slumped to a shock 5-3 defeat to Switzerland. On a busy weekend of friendlies ahead of Euro 2012, which gets underway in less than two weeks, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque fielded a host of fringe players with Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao stars having played in Friday's Spanish Cup final. That left the door open for the likes of Atletico Madrid's Adrian Lopez to state his case, and he didn't disappoint, heading the world champions into a 64th-minute lead. Adrian was also instrumental in Spain's second goal 11 minutes later when he earned a penalty after being felled by Serbia captain Branislav Ivanovic, with the spot kick converted by Santi Cazorla. "We're not at all surprised by what the new faces brought to the game. We picked them for that," said Del Bosque, who names his final squad for the European championship on Sunday. "Now, for the final list, we have to put into perspective this one match and the way in which the players have performed throughout the season." Spain kick off their Group C campaign against Italy on June 10, followed by the Republic of Ireland on June 14 and wrapping up with Croatia on June 18. In Basel, Germany, who rested their eight-strong Bayern Munich contingent, suffered an error-plagued 5-3 defeat to Switzerland. It was a first win for Switzerland, who failed to qualify for Euro 2012, over Germany since 1956. Joachim Loew's Germany qualified for Euro 2012 without losing a match, but they have now lost two friendlies in succession having been defeated 2-1 by France in February. Their last friendly will be against Israel on May 31 before embarking on their Euro campaign against Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark in Group B. Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok, who has just left Bayer Leverkusen for fellow German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, grabbed a hat-trick with Andre Lichtsteiner and Admir Mehmedi also on target. Mats Hummels, Andre Schuerrle and Marco Reus hit back for the Germans. Portugal were held 0-0 in Leiria by Macedonia in a disappointing performance by Paulo Bento's side whose last friendly will be against Turkey in Lisbon on June 2. "We played well against a team who defended in depth. It is always complicated when it is like that," said Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his team's best chances from first-half free-kicks. "The most important match will be the first one of the Euros against Germany. I hope to have a good tournament, but I have nothing to prove to anybody. I am not preoccupied by winning the Ballon d'Or. I don't even think about it." Group rivals Denmark lost 3-1 to a young Brazil side, who are preparing for the London Olympics, in a friendly in Hamburg. Porto attacker Hulk gave Brazil the ideal start, his powerful left-footed shot from distance beating Thomas Sorensen to open the scoring inside 10 minutes. Brazil doubled their lead soon after when Niki Zimling turned an Oscar cross into his own net under pressure from Hulk. And Hulk further increased Brazil's lead five minutes before the break with a neat finish at the end of an excellent run. Nicklas Bendtner pulled a goal back for the Danes.
